The REA group's estates are located in Hulu Belayan, a landscape mostly less than 100 metres above sea level, and dominated by low hills, with scattered freshwater or peat swamp habitats adjacent to the banks of the Belayan river and its tributaries. Virtually all marketable timber was removed prior to the REA group’s arrival. Where forests still persist, most comprise low canopy belukar, or regrowth, dominated by Seroba or Macaranga sp. These forest remnants, which the group seeks to conserve, can still regenerate within the present mosaic of disturbed natural and agricultural lands.

REA Kon manages the conserved areas through a process of physical and biological inventory, monitoring and assessment. Management actions include the clear demarcation of all conservation areas, habitat enrichment to improve survival rates for sensitive species and walking surveys and camera trapping to establish a permanent “triage” database of flora and fauna found within the conservation areas.

Programmes aimed at improving environmental practices in the REA group’s agricultural operations are undertaken jointly by the group’s operational management and REA Kon.  These include monitoring of water quality in rivers within the group’s concession areas;  studies of the contribution that forest predators can make to pest control within oil palm plantings; and a project to improve recycling of village waste.

REA Kon also seeks to conserve biodiversity through co-operation with local communities.  Current community programmes focus on conservation education;  technical training for villagers to help acquaint them with scientific terminology and field procedures (with a view to their eventual involvement in inventory, monitoring and assessment activities); and management for sustainable use, particularly in relation to any biological species that have traditionally been or are currently used for commercial activities.
