A charitable foundation, the Yayasan Ulin (“YU”) or Ironwood Foundation, has been established by the group to extend conservation activities into the wider Belayan river basin and beyond the group's own conservation areas that are managed by REA Kon. YU works with non-governmental organisations, academic bodies, zoos and other third parties and focuses on promoting conservation in areas external to the group’s plantations. Projects undertaken to-date include monitoring of water levels and a tag and release programme for endangered or threatened aquatic species caught by traditional fishermen in the wetlands around the group’s agricultural areas.
YU is assisted by a board of respected international and local scientific advisers. The REA group provides financial support to YU and encourages stakeholders in the group’s operations to do likewise. Further information can be obtained from YU's own website at http://yayasan-ulin.org.
