Sustainable Practices

The REA group is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (“RSPO”) and is committed to compliance with the eight principles and 39 criteria for sustainable production of palm oil that RSPO has defined.  In particular, the REA group operates a zero burning policy in relation to land development and actively promotes integrated pest management throughout its operations.

Fibrous residues from the milling of oil palm fruit is used to fuel oil mill boilers from which steam is generated.  The steam is then used to drive steam turbines for generating electricity.   In normal operation, mills can run on the fibrous residues of their won operations.

All processing waste is recycled.  Oil mill effluent is first treated in effluent ponds (to reduce its biological and chemical oxygen demand) and is then composted with empty fruit bunches.  The composting process is assisted by an accelerant and takes 45 days for each batch,  The resultant compost is used in substitution for inorganic fertiliser.

While oil mill effluent is undergoing treatment in effluent ponds, it releases methane.  Two methane conversion plants are currently under construction in which released methane will be captured, passed through a biological scrubber and then used to fuel gas powered turbines.  The electricity that these generate will reduce further the REA group’s dependence upon diesel power generation and will improve the REA group’s carbon footprint.
